Luno Nigeria Admitted as First Global Exchange in SEC’s Accelerated Regulatory Programme
A Major Shift: Luno Becomes First Global Exchange Admitted to Nigeria SEC’s Sandbox
Nigeria’s digital asset ecosystem has reached a landmark turning point. Luno Nigeria has officially received Approval-in-Principle from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), making it the first global cryptocurrency exchange admitted into the commission’s Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP).
For a market historically defined by rapid grassroots adoption operating alongside policy uncertainty, this decision signals a structural shift: Nigeria is actively integrating digital assets into a formal, compliant financial framework.
What is the SEC’s ARIP Framework?
The Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP) was established by the SEC—under Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama—to onboard Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) and digital investment platforms into a structured, supervised framework.
Rather than shutting crypto platforms out of the formal capital markets, ARIP operates as a regulatory sandbox. It allows the SEC to evaluate operational models, security standards, and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance in real time while platforms operate within a defined scope.
While Luno was admitted alongside several local fintech and infrastructure entities—such as Bitbarter, GetEquity, and Blockvault—its status as an established international brand makes it a key precedent for foreign platforms operating in Africa.
Why Luno's Admission Matters
Having operated in Nigeria since 2015, Luno has navigated multiple shifts in local banking regulations, peer-to-peer transitions, and market cycles. Securing ARIP admission brings key advantages to both the platform and the broader market:
- Unlocking Institutional Crypto: Regulatory clarity is a prerequisite for corporate participation. With SEC supervision, traditional banks, asset managers, and payment processors have a compliant pathway to partner with exchanges on treasury management, stablecoin infrastructure, and crypto-as-a-service products.
- Investor Safeguards: Participating in ARIP subjects the exchange to ongoing compliance checks, asset segregation rules, and consumer protection mandates, raising the baseline security for everyday users.
- A Regulatory Blueprint for Emerging Markets: Nigeria consistently ranks among the highest countries globally for cryptocurrency adoption. Establishing a functional sandbox shows how regulators can protect financial stability without restricting economic innovation.
"Admission into ARIP gives us a clearer regulatory pathway, strengthens trust with customers and partners, and provides a stronger foundation for the next phase of our growth." — Ayotunde Alabi, CEO of Luno Nigeria
What Lies Ahead
As Luno works through the incubation period under the SEC’s supervision, the ultimate milestone will be transitioning from Approval-in-Principle to full VASP licensing. This move marks a transition from shadow market dynamics toward a fully regulated digital asset market in Africa's largest economy.
